How Wegovy works

GLP-1 is the hormone your gut releases after eating to tell your brain you are full. Semaglutide mimics GLP-1 and lasts a whole week per injection.

Appetite drops, portions shrink, and the background hum of cravings fades. In the SELECT trial, semaglutide also reduced the risk of major cardiovascular events by 20% in people with existing heart disease.

Prefer not to inject? The Wegovy pill delivers the same medicine as a daily tablet.

Side effects and safety

Common and usually short-lived

Nausea, most often after a dose increase. Constipation or diarrhoea, reflux, tiredness and redness where you inject. Smaller meals, slower eating, less fat and plenty of water ease most of these.
