Nevolat daily liraglutide injection

The predecessor to the weekly GLP-1 pens. Nevolat produces smaller average losses but remains a useful option when weekly medicines are not suitable, and a familiar one for people who used Saxenda.

How Nevolat works

Liraglutide is a GLP-1 agonist like semaglutide, but with a much shorter life in the body, about 13 hours, which is why it needs daily injection rather than weekly. It was the first GLP-1 licensed for weight management (as Saxenda), and Nevolat is the licensed generic version of the same medicine.

What the trials show

In the SCALE trial, liraglutide 3 mg produced an average loss of about 8% of body weight over 56 weeks, alongside diet and activity support, roughly half the Wegovy 2.4 mg average and about a third of Mounjaro's highest-dose figure. Meaningful, but modest by modern standards.

Who it still suits

  • People who cannot take semaglutide or tirzepatide but tolerate liraglutide.
  • People switching from Saxenda who want the same medicine at a lower cost.
  • Some prefer a daily injection's flexibility, doses can be held or adjusted day to day under prescriber guidance.

For most new patients, a weekly pen or daily tablet is the stronger starting point. Your prescriber will say so plainly if that applies to you.

Using it

One injection daily, any time, with or without food. The dose starts at 0.6 mg and rises weekly to the 3 mg maintenance dose. The pen stores in the fridge before first use and at room temperature for up to a month once in use. Side effects follow the usual GLP-1 pattern, nausea first, settling within weeks, and the same urgent warning signs apply as for all medicines in this class.
