Injection technique: sites, rotation and a pain-free routine
Most people find the weekly pen far easier than expected. Sites, rotation, technique and disposal, everything in one place.
Where to inject
Three areas, all with good fatty tissue:
- Stomach, at least 5 cm from the navel. The most popular site and usually the least sensitive.
- Front of the thighs, the middle third.
- Back of the upper arm, works, but usually needs a second person.
Why rotation matters
Injecting the same spot repeatedly causes lumps (lipohypertrophy) that slow absorption and irritate skin. Rotate weekly, a simple pattern like stomach left, stomach right, thigh left, thigh right covers a month without thinking. Mark the day's site in your phone if it helps.
The technique
- Let the pen warm out of the fridge for 15 to 30 minutes, cold medicine stings more.
- Wash hands. Wipe the site with soap and water or an alcohol wipe and let it dry.
- Always a new needle. Attach, prime a new pen before first use per the leaflet.
- Pinch is optional. A relaxed muscle hurts less than a tense one.
- Press and hold, count slowly to 5 (Mounjaro) or 6 (Wegovy), then lift straight out.
Bruising occasionally happens and is harmless. A drop of blood is fine.
If you are needle-worried
The needles are 4 to 6 mm and finer than a sewing thread, most people report the anticipation vastly exceeds the sensation. Techniques that help: inject after a warm shower, distract with a video, and give yourself three doses before judging. If needles remain a hard no, the tablet options exist precisely for you.
Sharps disposal
Used needles go straight into your sharps bin, never loose in household waste, never recapped by hand. When the bin is three-quarters full, seal it and follow your local council's sharps collection scheme. Most pharmacies also accept sealed bins. Never put sharps bins in recycling.
